State Level Buds Festival to be held at Kozhikode

The State level Buds festival will be held on 12 and 13 February 2018 at JDT Islam Orphanage, Kozhikode. The district level buds festivals had been organized in all districts across the state for the past few weeks. 147 boys and 119 girls who were the winners of the district levels buds festival will take part in the State Level Buds Festival.

The children would participate in single dance, light music, fancy dress, mimicry, monoact, cinematic music, recitation, instrumental music, painting (crayons ), pencil drawing, group dance and action song competitions.

The first buds festival was organized at Thiruvananthapuram in 2017, in which 134 students from 64 buds schools actively participated.

As per the National Disabilities Act of 2002, it is the responsibility of the country to ensure equal rights for the persons with disabilities as they are the valuable resources of the country. It was in this regard that Kudumbashree Mission started Buds Schools associating with Local Self Government Department. The first of its kind was started at Venganoor Panchayath, Thiruvananthapuram in 2004.

Now there are 5119 students studying in 64 Buds Schools and 87 Buds Rehabilitation Centres. In addition to this Government of Kerala had given approval for starting 200 more buds institutions.

Kudumbashree Mission was a prominent participant at the 'Come on Kerala', the magnificent commercial & cultural mega event organised by Gulf Madhyamam, the leading Malayalam daily in Gulf countries from 25-27 January 2018 at Sharja Expo Centre. As Keralites are the largest expatriate group in UAE and many Keralites have been named as successful business men and professionals and many have become influencing personalities in Gulf, Kudumbashree would like to facilitate the women entrepreneurs to look out for right opportunities to develop better synergy with UAE's mounting economy and to showcase their enterprises and products & services.

'Come on Kerala' provided a prospective launchpad for spreading Kudumbashree's wings to Gulf Countries. Kudumbashree was represented by Mr. Ajith Chacko, Chief Operating Officer, NRLM. He presented a session titled 'Kudumbashree - the Pride of Kerala' in the B2B meeting held on 27 January 2018 at Sharja Expo Centre and participated in the Panel Discussion titled 'Come on Kerala - beyond borders'.

Kudumbashree had signed a basic MoU with M/s Jaleel Holdings, a leading General Traders and Wholesalers in UAE for partnering towards increasing Kudumbashree women entrepreneurs' capacities to look at better product quality and design towards linking them with bigger markets such as international markets. Come on Kerala opened up doors of immense potential and possibilities for Kudumbashree Mission.

From now the 'Madhura Savari' by Kudumbashree Kozhikode district Mission will add more sweetness to SM street. The two six-seater buggies run by the Kudumbashree women offering a non-polluting riding experience for shoppers on SM Street is attracting many. ‘Madhura Savari’ (sweet journey), as the name signifies, is a boon for the differently-abled and the elderly looking forward to a hassle-free shopping experience on the street. The buggy ride was flagged off by Shri. U.V Jose, District Collector, Kozhikode on 26 January 2018.

A newly formed four-member entrepreneurs’ group having four-wheeler driving licence is operating the buggy ride at an affordable rate. Smt Jancy Jose, Smt. Shitha Rameshan, Smt. Sheena and Smt. K. Rajitha are the entrepreneurs who are in charge of the Buggy Ride. Only ₹10 was charged for one-side ride.

The women entrepreneurs had jointly secured a bank loan of ₹11 lakh for the venture. It is also planned to add more buggies at the end of the trial run and transgender persons will be given the opportunity to steer the wheels. People welcomed the buggy service by Kudumbashree with open hearts.The collection at the end of the short inaugural service was Rs. 2,400.

With the introduction of electronic ticketing machines, only one person would be needed to control the vehicle and the other entrepreneurs would be able to work in shifts.

By issuing ID cards Kerala became the first state in the country to ensure the proper inclusion of street vendors in the market, thereby in the society. The programme was implemented throughout the 93 Urban Local Bodies in Kerala. And Palakkad district was more active than other districts in the state and almost completed the ID card distribution.

The project started by Kottayam district mission as part of National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM). Kudumbashree is the nodal agency of NULM in Kerala. CLC in Kottayam is in Thadathilpparambu building near Vyaparabhavan. he CLC will act as a bridge between urban poor and middle , higher income groups who are accessing various services like security, carpentry, gardening, construction, plumbing, electrical work, health care support, housekeeping which in turn is provided by Urban Poor.

Kudumbashree getting strong among tribal areas in Kerala

Kudumbashree Mission is getting strong among the tribal population in Kerala. Out of the 127987 tribal families in Kerala, 106162 families are active members of Kudumbashree NHGs. It was found out from the tribal survey that 5962 NHGs are actively participating in the tribal areas. It was in 2007, that Kudumbashree tribal special livelihood project was launched associating with Scheduled Tribes Development Department to address the issues faced by the tribal population in Kerala. The tribal population of Kerala is 454302 and there exists a total of 5484 tribal clans in the state.

Wayanad is the district with maximum number of tribal NHGs. There are 1612 tribal NHGs and 27135 Kudumbashree members in Wayanad. In Kazargode, there are 718 tribal NHGs and 15850 members. In Idukki, there are 715 NHGs and 13687 members. Alappuzha is the district with least number of tribal NHGs. there are only 3 tribal NHGs and 42 members.

Kudumbashree plans to strengthen the livelihood activities in tribal areas in the upcoming years. More micro enterprises like handicrafts, handloom, tailoring units etc will be started focusing tribal NHGs in various districts.

It is with the convergence with governmental and non governmental organisations that special tribal project was carried out by Kudumbashree. In the first phase, the programme was implemented in the selected 10 panchayaths of Idukki, Wayanad, Palakkad and Kasargod districts. The second phase was conducted in the selected 10 panchayaths of the remaining districts except Alappuzha. And in the third phase, it was extended to all panchayaths where tribals reside.

The Attappady special project is being carried out by Kudumbashree in Attappady from 2013 onwards for making progressive changes among the lives of tribals. Projects giving special emphasis to the areas like Edamalakkudy are the major ones among the tribal focused programmes. Tribal outlets were started for giving maximum exposure to the products of tribals in Idukki, the second largest district in the basis of tribal population. Group farming, PSC coaching etc are also progressing as part of he tribal special livelihood projects.

Kudumbashree Hostels being a boon

Hostels run by Kudumbashree CDS are of high demand in Kozhikode city. Located at Francis road, near fourth platform of Kozhikode Railway station, the recently started 'Rail view' women's hostel which have 33 rooms, including single, double and triple rooms providing the state of the art facilities like free WiFi, CCTV, recreation club, library and reading room, laundry, conference hall, counselling centre etc. Rail view hostel was inaugurated by Shri. T.P Ramakrishnan, Minister for Labour and Excise, Government of Kerala on 30 November 2017.

The all-women management which provide online booking facility, has also made arrangements to accommodate women working on late night shifts. The counselling centre at the hostel which provide free counselling for women and children and the 'Railway tasty corner' food court which serve tasty food are also accessible to the public as well. Rail view is the fourth hostel started by Kudumbashree CDS. Smt. P.P Sheeja and Smt. V. Pushpalatha, Smt Savithri, officer bearers of Kozhikode Corporation Kudumbashree CDS North are in charge if the the 'Railview' Hostel.

The first in the series, 'Feminara' Womens Hostel was started at Gujarathi street in 2014, which was an instant hit. Following its success, 'Fly Sky' Hostel and 'She Homes' Hostel were started at Govindapuram and Parayancheri respectively.

The demand for women's hostels rise during entrance examinations and other tests. Kudumbashree hostels can accommodate around 300 people altogether in its four hostels. The hostels provide all the modern facilities for a comfortable stay in affordable price, had became a second home for its inhabitants.
