Through 'Happy Kerala - Happiness Centre' Project, Kudumbashree aims to make every family a centre of happiness by ensuring the overall well-being and upliftment of every individual in the society. By raising the happiness index of families in this way, the state can advance in the happiness index. This project is being implemented in connection with the FNHW (Food Nutrition Health and WASH) activities being implemented by Kudumbashree. Shri. Jafar Malik IAS, Executive Director, Kudumbashree launched the logo of the 'Happy Keralam-Happiness Centre' Project during the function held at Kudumbashree State Mission, Thiruvananthapuram on 24 August 2024.

Kudumbashree ready to make Kerala 'happy', State Level Training to be held Next Week

Kudumbashree is moving ahead with efforts to start Happiness Centres in 154 Model CDSs with the concept of Happy Kerala. The aim is to raise the happiness index of families. A three-day state-level training programme for the project trainers will be conducted on 28, 29 and 30 August 2024, with districts divided into South and North regions. 
 
A state-level training module, project-related guidelines and a template for surveying households were also prepared at a Planning Workshop organized in Thiruvananthapuram on 19 August 2024. The regional openings are Kollam and Kozhikode. A total of 140 people will participate in the training (ten people from each district). The training is conducted by State Level Resource Persons comprising of experts in various fields.
 
Trainees will participate in the activities of setting up 'Happiness Forums' at District and CDS ADS levels. The Happiness Forum is formed by including representatives of the Kudumbashree three-tier organizational system and representatives of local bodies. 'Idam' (spaces) will also be formed at the ward level with 10 to 40 families in each ward. It will include all the families in the general society. The family-based micro-level plan will be prepared in these 'spaces' formed at the ward level to find out the required happiness index for each family.

What are Happiness Centres?
Kudumbashree aims to make every family a centres of happiness by ensuring the overall well-being and upliftment of every individual and family in the society through Happiness Centres. With the implementation of this very innovative concept, Kerala will be able to advance in the happiness index and become a model for other states. The project is implemented in connection with the FNHW (Food, Nutrition, Health and WASH) activities as part of the National Rural Livelihood Mission implemented by Kudumbashree.
 
Actions are planned for the project to address the inadequacies faced by an individual or family in various areas like equality, economic sustainability, environment, art, literature, sports, mental health, nutrition, hygiene and democratic values and lead them to a happy life. The project will be implemented in such a way that it will be helpful to every person of the society like children, youth, adults and the elderly.
 
Activities
A survey will be conducted focusing on the families in the Model CDSs where Happiness Centres will be established and a micro-level plan will be prepared to raise the Happiness Index of those families. On the basis of this project, a Happiness Index will be prepared according to the social situation of Kerala and the project activities will be started after conducting an evaluation under the leadership of experts in various fields.
 
Kudumbashree will make convergences with various departments like health, social justice, women and child development, agriculture, animal husbandry, dairy development, forest and other departments in the implementation of the project. It will also coordinate with the various projects implemented by Kudumbashree.

Trainees of BUDS Institutions celebrates BUDS Day

The trainees of BUDS Institutions celebrated BUDS Day on 16 August 2024 with various events. BUDS Schools and BUDS Rehabilitation Centres (for above 18 years) are jointly run by local self-government bodies and Kudumbashree for intellectually challenged children. The first BUDS School in the state started functioning in Venganoor Gram Panchayat of Thiruvananthapuram district on 16 August 2004. The objectives of the Celebration of BUDS Day is to make BUDS Institutions more popular, bringing trainees into the mainstream of society, embedding more children in BUDS Institutions and providing psychological support to parents.
 
BUDS Week was also organized as part of BUDS Day Celebrations. As part of the BUDS Day Celebrations, various Buds institutions organized many programmes such as home visits to the homes of fellow trainees who could not reach the institutions, awareness raising for parents, public visits, film screenings, outings and art programmes. As of now, there are 11847 trainees in 361 existing institutions (BUDS Schools and BUDS Rehabilitation Centres).

Kerala State Farms Award 2023 : Proud Achievement for Kudumbashree NHG member Bindu & BUDS Paradise School of Thirunelly

Kudumbashree made notable achievements in State Farm Awards 2023.Ms. K Bindu, Member, Haritha JLG in Pattuvam CDS of  Kannur district won the 'Karshakathilakam' Award for the Best Woman Farmer in Kerala. Whereas, Kudumbashree BUDS Paradise School of Thirunelly Grama Panchayat in Wayanad district won the Award for the Best Agricultural School in Special School Category.
 
Bindu is cultivating many crops such as  paddy, flowers, turmeric, ginger, vegetables, sesame and chickpeas in 26 acres of land. Ms. Bindu of Kakavani House, Mangalasserry has been active in agriculture for the last 25 years. Bindu also trains Kudumbashree members to operate farm machinery.
 
40 differently-abled students are studying at BUDS Paradise School, which is run under the supervision of Kudumbashree Wayanad District Mission and Thirunelly Gram Panchayat. The Agri Therapy Project implemented in about 1 acre of land as per the directions of Kudumbashree State Mission for the mental and physical growth of the trainees made the school eligible for the award. Assistance was provided by the Keystone Foundation to set up the vegetable garden. Thirunelly Krishi Bhavan also supervised the project.
 
Tomatoes, brinjals, cauliflower, cabbage, pulses, spinach, colocasia, elephant yam, cassava, banana, ivy gourd, green chillies, bird's eye chilli, purple yam and bamboos are cultivated for children's lunch.

First Training Programme of Kudumbashree's 'Punarjeevanam' concluded

The first training of Punarjeevanam'- Kudumbashree's Entrepreneurship Development Series to revive the livelihood opportunities in the agricultural sector held at Nirvana Holistic Living, Sholayur, Attappady has concluded. The three day training programme started when Shri. M. B Rajesh, Minister, Local Self Government Department, Excise Department and Parliamentary Affairs Department, Government of Kerala launched the programme and inaugurated the first training of the series online on 12 August 2024. 
 
On the final day of the  training, Dr. Jisy George, Subject Matter Specialist, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kayamkulam, Alappuzha spoke about the Value Addition of Small Grains/ Banana. She explained the need to include millet in the diet and how millets will help in controlling lifestyle diseases like diabetes and pointed out the health benefits and nutrition values of different millets. Dr. Jisy also explained in detail about the value added products such as traditional products, bakery products, extruded products, flaked and popped products, instant food mixes, fortified products and probiotic products. Practical sessions were also held.
 
Ms. Aswathy, Entrepreneur, V One, Tholikkode, Punalur, Kollam shared her success story during the session 'Women Empowerment through Livelihood-Success Stories of Women Entrepreneurs'. She explained the struggles she had faced in life in becoming a successful entrepreneur. She shared about the training she received, how she launched her product to the market and how she is marketing her product. She demonstrated her products during the training programme and she stressed the importance of labelling and branding while launching a product. She also offered her wholehearted support for the trainees who wish to launch their own products. The presentation of 5 nutritional products prepared from small grains such as Health Mix, Cookies (Spicy), Cookies (Sweet), Porridge mix and Upma mix was also arranged. 
 
Punarjeevanam will bring about a major change in the agricultural livelihood sector by focusing on skill development required at community level in each district and year-long continuous training and support. Punarjeevanam is a revolutionary step of Kudumbashree in the field of agricultural livelihood. The project was jointly implemented by the Kudumbashree State Mission and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research's flagship organization in tuber research, the Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CTCRI).

Punarjeevanam', the  Entrepreneurship Development Series of Kudumbashree was launched. Shri. M. B Rajesh, Minister, Local Self Government Department, Excise Department and Parliamentary Affairs Department, Government of Kerala launched the programme and inaugurated the first training of the series via online on 12 August 2024. 
 
'Punarjeevanam' is the  Entrepreneurship Development Series of Kudumbashree implemented across the state to revive the livelihood opportunities in the agricultural sector. The Minister said. This workshop which is jointly implemented by Kudumbashree and Indian Council of Agricultural Research- Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CTCRI) at Attappady of Palakkad is designed entirely on the needs of the trainees to equip the farmers and agri-entrepreneurs of the Kudumbashree to perform better in agriculture, agribusiness and other allied sectors. He added.
 
 Punarjeevanam will bring about a major change in the agricultural livelihood sector by focusing on skill development required at community level in each district and year-long continuous training and support. Punarjeevanam is a revolutionary step of Kudumbashree in the field of agricultural livelihood.
 
Through this project, enriched sweet potato varieties, their cultivation method and value addition, which is a magical crop with great potential to combat malnutrition in the Attappady region and create new livelihood opportunities in the said region, will be introduced. Along with this, guidelines and seminars on other schemes available in the livelihood sector and procedures for starting enterprises will be organized as part of the three-day workshop. The scheme also envisages follow-up activities such as nutrition gardens, agribusiness schools, agri-input, research and development activities and agricultural study tours for trainees.

Whereas, Dr. M.S Sajeev, Principal Scientist, Crop Utilization Division, ICAR-CTCRI talked about the 'Value Addition and Entrepreneurship Opportunities in Tuber Crops' and Dr. P. S Shivakumar, Principal Scientist, Department of Social Science & Extension, ICAR-CTCRI spoke about the 'Lessons from the Rainbow Diet Campaign Project. 
 
On the second day of the workshop, Ms. Geeta Salish, Entrepreneur, Geetha's Home to Home, Amala Nagar, Thrissur will share her success story during the session 'Women Empowerment through Livelihood-Success Stories of Women Entrepreneurs'. Practical classes will be held on Snack Food Production-Chips using cassava, sweet potato, colocasia and yam. Manufacturing of products such as namkeen, mixture and cookies using powder of potato crops will also be held.

Around 300 people participated in the programme. Saplings of sweet potatoes, biofertilizers and bio capsules were distributed at the programme. The Presidents of  various Panchayat Samithis received the saplings on behalf of the participants.  An Exhibition of various tuber crops, its value added products, chinese potato, yam, colocasia, arrowroot, ginger, radish etc was also arranged as part of the programme. 
 
The three-day training programme being held at Nirvana Holistic Living, Sholayur, Attappady Palakkad will come to an end on 14 August 2024. The project is jointly implemented by the Kudumbashree State Mission and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research's flagship organization in tuber research, the Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CTCRI).

International Day of Indigenous People organized in Kottayam; Notable opening with Significant Participation

Kudumbashree today organized the state-level observance of the International Indigenous People's Day on 9 August 2024 in Kottayam. It was notable that the Kudumbashree members from the local areas of Palakkad, Kottayam, Thrissur and Ernakulam districts inaugurated the day observance.
 
Dr. B. Sreejith, Programme Officer, Kudumbashree presided over the function. Shri. Robin Tommy, Head of Research, Tata Consultancy delivered the keynote address. Kudumbashree members from the indigenous areas shared their experiences about the characteristics of their respective indigenous areas and the views put forward by the indigenous people. Shri. Arun P. Rajan, State Programme Manager, Kudumbashree welcomed the gathering and Shri. Jishnu Gopan, State Assistant Programme Manager delivered the vote of thanks.
 
'Sajjam- Surakshitharavam Surakshitharakkam' (Be Safe and Make Safe) Disaster Management Training Programme was also started under the leadership of the Scheduled Tribe Sustainable Development Project organized by Kudumbashree in the indigenous area on 9 August 2024.  'Sajjam- Surakshitharavam Surakshitharakkam' (Be Safe and Make Safe) Disaster Management Training Programme is implemented by considering the unique social, economic, cultural and environmental characteristics of indigenous communities to understand and respond to natural disasters. Apart from Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts, the training for the high school students in hamlets in other 11 districts was completed by 11 August 2024.

Kudumbashree offers helping hands during the Wayanad Landslides

Alike the exemplary confidence and power shown during the crisis of unprecedented floods and covid-19, Kudumbashree women are offering helping hands to the victims of the Wayanad Landslides. From coordination of the Help Desks to Counselling Services, Kerala's women army is extending their compassion to those who are suffering due to the landslides. 10 CDS Office Bearers are given charge of the Help Desks are opened in GHSS, Meppadi, St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, Meppadi, St. Joseph's UP School, Meppadi, Kottanad GUP School, Nellimunda Temple Hall, GHSS, Thrikkaipatta and Kappamkolly Aroma Inn. They will be available at the Help Desk until the camp will be disbursed and will coordinate the activities of the Help Desk associating with Revenue/Health/Police Officials and will update the details of the inmates and the physical conditions to the control room opened at Meppadi Grama Panchayath. 

 
About 50 Haritha Karma Sena Members selected from different panchayaths of the district are active in sanitation activities in the relief camps. Kudumbashree is also extending mental support to the survivors of the landslide who lost their dear ones in the landslide. As part of this, Community Counsellors who work under the leadership of Kudumbashree Snehitha Gender Help Desk are extending counselling services to women and children. More than 450 Resource Persons of FNHW (Food Nutrition Health Water and Sanitation) Project are working in various camps extending various services to the inmates of the camps. Around 30 members including Kudumbashree Executive Members, ADS Office Bearers and Kudumbashree members of Meppadi and Moopainad CDS are actively working here. 
 
Around 1000 people, including those who escaped from the landslide site and those in nearby areas facing the threat of landslides, are staying at Meppadi Higher Secondary School, Kaipattukunnu Higher Secondary School and Meppadi Juma Masjid. Also, about fifty families are living in the SKMJ School in Kalpetta. The aim is to provide the necessary assistance to them through the Kudumbashree system in the district. For this, various activities have been planned under the leadership of Kudumbashree Wayanad District Mission. Kudumbashree District Programme Managers have also been tasked with intensifying and coordinating the activities implemented by Kudumbashree for those living in the camps.

Agriculture Minister inaugurates Kudumbashree 'Sraddha' State Level Cancer Awareness Campaign

 ' Shri. P. Prasad, Minister, Department of Agriculture,  Government of Kerala inaugurated the 'Sraddha' State Level Cancer Awareness Camp jointly organized by Kudumbashree, Medicon- Medical Students Collective of Kerala Sastra Sahithya Parishad at Coir Corporation Hall, Alappuzha.

It is really appreciative that Kudumbashree is trying to practically address a really serious issue. It's saddening that Kerala is slowly becoming the 'Cancer Capital of India' and Kudumbashree is making efforts to find a solution for this issue. The Minister said.  We should lead a lifestyle that would take health seriously into consideration. The quality of the food we intake has a key role in this. We should  realise that agriculture and health are connected. Changing the food and lifestyle can help control cancer. He added. The Minister also pointed out the importance of sanitation in controlling cancer. The Minister said that health should be our foremost priority. The Minister also offered the support of the Department of Agriculture for this programme.  The Minister also released the logo of the campaign.

In the first phase, the campaign will be implemented in Ambalapuzha and Aryad blocks of Alappuzha district. The aim of this campaign is to provide women with the necessary awareness about breast cancer and cervical cancer and to provide them with the necessary support for cancer diagnosis and specialist treatment.

The 'Sraddha' State Level Campaign is being organized as part of the National Rural Livelihood Mission FNHW (Food Nutrition Health Water and Sanitation) project activities implemented in the state through Kudumbashree. In the first phase, all the NHG members in all the wards of the selected blocks will be made part of the awareness camp. Cancer awareness class will be given to them under the leadership of Medicon Resource Person, Gender Point Person of NHG and selected NHG member. Along with this, preliminary screening will also be conducted. Once these two are completed in all the wards, medical camps will also be organized at the block level in collaboration with Medicon. Those diagnosed with the disease through primary screening and medical camps will be provided support for follow-up treatment in collaboration with local health institutions. Necessary psychosocial support and counseling will be provided through Kudumbashree Snehitha Gender Help Desk and Gender Resource Centre. The diagnosed members will be provided with further treatment instructions and referral letter with the help of the Medicon team.

District, CDS, ADS and FNHW Resource Persons will visit the houses of infected members once a month. Also, in association with Family Health Centres, their health condition will be assessed by Asha workers and necessary support will be provided. Women will also be made aware of menstrual hygiene, physical mental health and lifestyle disease prevention to improve family health.

Shri. M. B Rajesh, Minister, Local Self Government Department, Excise Department & Parliamentary Affairs Department, Government of Kerala performed the State Level Inauguration of Kudumbashree's 'Nirapolima' Project & 'Onakani' Project at Anamukham Ward, Perumkadavila Panchayath, Thiruvananthapuram on 23 July 2024. The Minister inaugurated the projects by planting brinjal and chrysanthemum plants in the fields of Anjana JLG, Anamukham ward, Perumkadavila. The Minister said that the objective of these two projects is to deliver good quality vegetables and flowers to the natives during onam season and thereby provide livelihood to women.These projects will help Kudumbashree women to make maximum out of onam markets. The Minister also wished that may this onam be colourful with the flowers of Kudumbashree's 'Nirapolima' Project and prosperous with the vegetables of Kudumbashree's 'Onakani' Project.
 
Kudumbashree is already active in agriculture. There are 3,92,682 members in 84,327 JLGs active in agriculture and 17,635 hectares of land is made cultivable, under Kudumbashree. Bank loans are ensured for those cultivated in a minimum of 25 cents and above. If the loan is repaid on time, Interest Subsidy and Incentive is given. In Organic Farming more than 10% is given as incentive. Rs 4,42,54,417 was given as incentive and Rs 4,40,31,587 was given as Interest Subsidy during 2023-24. The Minister added.
 
The Minister said that Kudumbashree is the name of the great movement that changed the fate of women's society in Kerala. Kudumbashree brought about 50 lakh women from kitchens to the mainstream of the society. Before Kudumbashree was launched, we could not have imagined this much of a women audience in any programmes. Kudumbashree made possible the financial, social and political empowerment of women. It increased the status of women in the family and society.  He added.
 
As part of the 'Nirapolima' Project, the Kudumbashree farmers' groups will start flower cultivation. At present 3350 farmer groups (Joint Liability Groups-JLGs) are active in floriculture in 1250 acres. This project will be implemented targeting the Onam market only. Nirapolima' aims to cultivate at least one thousand acres of Chrysanthemum, Jasmine,  Marigold and Globe Amaranth (Vadamulla), which are in high demand in the Onam market. Kudumbashree is giving a Revolving Fund of Rs 10,000 for flower cultivation in 1 acre of land. 
 
Whereas, 'Onakani 2024', the Intensive Agriculture Project will produce non-toxic vegetables. This scheme is conceived with the objective of providing vegetables to the consumers throughout the year. As part of this, 6000 acres of land will be cultivated this year with peas, bitter gourd, lady's finger, snake gourd, banana, spinach, yam, tomato, brinjal, moringa, mango and chilli. The agricultural produce will be delivered directly to the public market by the farmers, eliminating the middlemen to provide better income to the farmers. At present, under Kudumbashree, 11298 farmer groups are cultivating various types of vegetables. 
 
It is estimated that a total of 25,000 women farmers across the state will be able to provide a better livelihood out of which 20,000 will be provided through the intensive agriculture scheme and 5,000 through flower cultivation. Both the schemes are to provide more employment opportunities to women farmers under Kudumbashree. 
 
Kudumbashree will provide support including technical assistance to farmers to increase production. Maximum marketing channels will be set. Kudumbashree intends to attract more farmers to this region and expand flower farming to more areas in the coming years as they get better returns. Achieving self-sufficiency in vegetable production for domestic consumption is also an important objective. Kudumbashree's support will be made available to ensure better production and marketability of products. Apart from special occasions like Onam, Christmas, Vishu and Ramzan, all the marketing fairs organized under the auspices of Kudumbashree will also provide an opportunity to deliver and market agricultural products.
